A desert city at the convergence of multiple trading routes, known for its glass structures and artisan products.
The oasis at the heart of District 9 existed long before any human settlement, and has been used by travellers, nomadic tribes and wildlife since time immemorial. Now surrounded by a shining metropolis, the ‘City of Glass’ is aptly named for both its spires and domed greenhouses, as well as for products as diverse as telescopes and terrariums.
During the dry season, sandstorms clear the streets and scour the city clean, slowly mattifying older glass structures. This provides the impetus for the annual ‘Festival of Renewal’, during which any opaque glass is replaced and either repurposed by glass blowers and artisans, or melted down to produce fresh panes.
