An isolated mountaintop town built around an ancient monastery. Known for the gruelling pilgrimage undertaken to reach it, and the ornate wooden carvings produced by the monks.
At a higher altitude than some floating cities and perpetually shrouded in cloud, District 17 sits atop the highest peak in the Dragonback mountain chain, which marks the Protectorate’s Southern border and blocks further passage south. Log cabins, wooden ramparts and other more recent structures huddle in the lee of the ancient stone monastery, which bears the evidence of eons of wind and rain; a testament to the Dwarven stonemasons who once called this mountaintop home. Nevertheless, it is slowly succumbing to the ravages of time, and every year more of its crumbling foundations shower down the cliff face atop which the town sits, and up which the Pilgrim Trail winds.
While a cablecar; and more recently, skyframes; have made the town more accessible, pilgrims from across the Protectorate still face the gruelling vertical ascent in order to win Io’s favour. In addition, the town attracts adventurers and intellectuals wishing to test their mettle against the Twin Vaults: a mysterious pair of doors deep within the Monastery, whose Dwarven runes promise glory for those capable enough to open them. Thus far, they have withstood every attempt to unlock their secrets.
